Master of Design
(M.Des)

About the Program

The Master of Design (M.Des) at MIT Vishwaprayag University is a rigorous, research-led postgraduate program crafted for designers who want to deepen their expertise, expand their creative intelligence, and step into leadership roles across India's fast-evolving design landscape. It is designed for graduates who understand that design is not decoration — it is a powerful discipline that shapes how people live, work, move, heal, and communicate. The M.Des at MIT VPU builds on the technical and conceptual foundations students bring, pushing them toward advanced practice in design research, strategic thinking, human-centred methodologies, and real-world project delivery.

Studio learning is at the heart of the program. Every semester, students engage with live briefs, research challenges, industry partners, and self-initiated projects that demand the full range of a designer's skills — critical observation, rigorous prototyping, iterative refinement, and compelling communication. Faculty drawn from professional design practice and academic research guide students not only to produce outstanding design work but to articulate the thinking behind it, defend design decisions, and understand the systemic implications of the choices they make.

MIT Vishwaprayag University's M.Des graduates go on to lead design functions at product companies, digital studios, consultancies, FMCG firms, startups, and public institutions — or to establish independent design practices that solve problems of genuine consequence. The program produces designers who are not just skilled practitioners but informed, reflective, and ethically grounded professionals ready for a world that urgently needs better design.

Be a Bahumukhi

The Bahumukhi philosophy at MIT Vishwaprayag University transforms every M.Des graduate into a multi-dimensional design thinker who operates at the intersection of craft, research, technology, and human insight. A Bahumukhi design professional does not merely produce aesthetic outputs — they frame complex problems, investigate human needs at depth, build systems that create lasting value, and lead with the strategic authority that comes from truly understanding why design decisions matter. They combine the perceptive rigour of a design researcher, the material intelligence of a product maker, the empathic sensitivity of a user experience architect, and the visual authority of a communication designer.

We cultivate in our graduates the capacity to move fluidly across the design ecosystem — from research and strategy, through concept development, prototyping, testing, and final delivery. Whether joining a global product company, leading a digital transformation team, building a brand identity system, designing a service experience, or launching an independent design studio, our M.Des graduates enter every environment not merely trained but genuinely prepared to practise design as a form of leadership.

Program Specialisations

Students choose from three specializations that align advanced studio practice with the most significant growth areas in India's design economy — each offering dedicated research studios, industry-mentored projects, and a focused design thesis to develop deep professional expertise.

Product Design
User Experience Design
Communication Design

Program Objectives

  • Develop advanced design research skills — including ethnographic inquiry, user studies, contextual analysis, and evidence-based design strategy — enabling graduates to frame and investigate complex design problems with rigour and depth.
  • Build mastery in a chosen specialization — Product Design, User Experience Design, or Communication Design — through intensive studio practice, advanced coursework, industry collaboration, and a self-directed thesis project.
  • Cultivate design leadership and strategic thinking, equipping graduates to lead design functions, manage multidisciplinary teams, present design rationale to stakeholders, and drive design-centred innovation within organisations.
  • Strengthen proficiency in advanced design tools and emerging technologies — including CAD/CAM, 3D fabrication and prototyping, interaction design platforms, digital communication tools, and AI-assisted design workflows.
  • Foster a strong awareness of sustainability, inclusivity, ethics, and social responsibility in design practice — developing designers who create not just for users but for communities, ecosystems, and future generations.
  • Prepare graduates for senior professional roles, doctoral research, and entrepreneurial ventures in design — through industry exposure, thesis development, and the reflective practice that distinguishes a master-level designer.

Student Testimonials

The Product Design specialization at M.Des level transformed the way I think about design problems. The thesis process — researching, prototyping, failing, refining, and finally presenting work I was genuinely proud of — gave me a depth of confidence I could not have built anywhere else. I now lead the product design team at a consumer electronics startup in Pune, and the foundation I built in my two M.Des years is something I draw on every single day.

M.Des 2024 · Product Design Lead at a Consumer Electronics Startup, Pune

The UX Design specialization gave me the research frameworks I was missing after my B.Des. Learning to conduct contextual interviews, build usability studies, and translate user insights into design decisions — and then defending those decisions in front of rigorous studio juries — made me a far more credible designer. I joined a top design consultancy in Bengaluru after graduating, and the M.Des research skills are what set me apart in the interview process.

M.Des 2024 · UX Researcher at a Design Consultancy, Bengaluru

I came into the Communication Design specialization wanting to understand visual identity at a deeper level — not just how to make things look good, but why they communicate the way they do. The faculty pushed me to justify every design choice, to research the cultural context behind visual systems, and to build brand identities that genuinely meant something. My M.Des thesis on visual language in Marathi digital media got published and opened doors I hadn't imagined possible.

M.Des 2023 · Brand Identity Designer at a Creative Agency, Mumbai

What the M.Des at MIT VPU gave me — beyond the studio skills and the thesis — was the ability to think about design as a strategic discipline. The courses on design leadership, systems thinking, and design entrepreneurship made me realise that a great designer has to understand the world their work exists in. I now run my own design practice in Solapur, working with local businesses and social organisations, and the two M.Des years gave me exactly the foundation I needed to do that with confidence.
